Dieudonné Nahimana
Dieudonné Nahimana’s strong vision for national development was birthed out of a tragic event in his home country, Burundi, when his father and family members were murdered in the devastating war of 1993. Without resources to continue his education and with no place to stay, He found himself on the streets experiencing one of his most difficult adversities in life. He faced the pain of neglect and isolation, the fear of an uncertain future, and the memories of his beloved family. Yet, he had the courage to persevere, hope, and dream.
On the Christmas Eve of 1998, young adult Dieudonné decided to use the remaining resources he had (5 USD) to share a meal with the street children around him. As He listened to the bursts of laughter and chants from them, He was overwhelmed by an atmosphere of love that celebrated ethnic diversity.
This one act of compassion eventually led to the inception of New Generation Burundi in 1998, a non-profit organization dedicated to nurture street-connected children and cultivate into a new generation of servant leaders. Over the past two decades, the organization has equipped over 6,000 youth with leadership and entrepreneurial skills and rehabilitated over 600 neglected street children and victims of war. Some of these street children gained international recognition when they secured the second position in the 2014 Street Child World Cup in Brazil; four gold medals in the 2016 Street Child World Cup in Brazil; and third position in the 2018 Moscow Street Child World Cup.
Moreover, Dieudonné has recently created the Dieudonné Nahimana Foundation (DNF) dedicated to youth leadership development and empowerment.
Dieudonné’s ability to equip, inspire, and mobilize the youth has brought hope, healing and dignity to thousands, and has been awarded the “National Recognition for Great Achievements” certificate and medal in 2018 by the President of the Republic of Burundi.
